The Middle Temple Association (Mauritius) continues to play a central role in promoting professional excellence, collegiality, and the core values of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple within the Mauritian Bar. The year 2026 marks a period of renewal, reflected through a newly elected Executive Committee, a landmark colloquium, and strengthened institutional engagement.
The newly constituted Executive Committee
Following elections held on Friday 13 February 2026, the Middle Temple Association (Mauritius) is led by a newly constituted Executive Committee under the leadership of its President, Mr Mohamad Rashad Daureeawo, Senior Counsel, with Ms Doordarshini Roopsoodha Busgeet serving as Secretary.

Colloquium and Welcoming Ceremony: A Landmark Event
On Friday 27 March 2026, the association hosted a Colloquium and Welcoming Ceremony for New Callees (September 2025 and January 2026 cohorts), under the theme: ‘Integrity of the Bar: Cornerstone of Justice’.

The event brought together distinguished members of the judiciary, the Bar, and key constitutional offices, including the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Solicitor General, reflecting its significance within the legal community.
The guest of honour, the President of the Republic of Mauritius, His Excellency Dharambeer Gokhool, emphasised the vital role of the legal profession in safeguarding the rule of law and maintaining democratic stability, underscoring that the credibility of the justice system rests upon the independence, integrity, and ethical conduct of its practitioners.
The address, delivered by the Former Chief Justice MF Eddy Balancy, highlighted the increasing complexity of legal practice and the need for discipline, intellectual rigor, and respect for the court, reminding new Callees that professional reputation is built through consistency and unwavering adherence to ethical principles.
The President of the Mauritius Bar Association, Antoine Domingue SC addressed the gathering with a focus on the collective responsibility of the Bar. He emphasised the importance of maintaining professional discipline and fostering collegiality among practitioners. His address also highlighted the critical role of mentorship, encouraging experienced members of the Bar to actively support and guide new entrants into the profession.
The Association expresses its sincere gratitude to Master Treasurer Bernard Richmond KC for his distinguished recorded message, which added a valuable international dimension to the ceremony and reinforced the enduring ties with the Inn.
As Master Treasurer of Middle Temple, his leadership and contribution to the Inn lend particular significance to his message, which was deeply appreciated by all in attendance.
Reflections from the Association’s Leadership
In his address, the President of the Middle Temple Association (Mauritius), Mr Rashad Daureeawo SC, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to upholding the traditions and values of the Inn. He stressed the importance of unity within the profession and the need to preserve the dignity of the Bar in an evolving legal landscape.
Mr Daureeawo SC further highlighted that the association serves not merely as a professional body but as a platform for meaningful engagement, professional development, and advocacy on issues affecting the administration of justice. He encouraged new Callees to actively participate in the Association’s activities and to view their membership as both a privilege and a responsibility.
As Secretary of the association, I addressed the new Callees with a message centred on professional identity and resilience. I reflected on the transition from academic training to legal practice, emphasising both the opportunities and the responsibilities inherent in being Called to the Bar.
I encouraged new practitioners to remain grounded in their values while navigating the demands of practice. I underscored the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and confidence, particularly in a profession that requires both intellectual discipline and emotional strength. I further called upon them to uphold ethical standards without compromise and to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Mauritian legal system.
Institutional Engagement: Courtesy Visits
In line with its commitment to strengthening institutional dialogue, the Executive Committee undertook a series of courtesy visits to key constitutional stakeholders.
A courtesy visit was held with the Honourable Gavin Glover SC at the Attorney General’s Office, during which key challenges faced by members of the Bar—particularly in practice and interaction with the justice system—were raised. Constructive discussions were held, and the association will formally submit a memorandum outlining these concerns together with practical recommendations to enhance efficiency.
The Executive Committee also had the honour of a courtesy visit to His Excellency Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House, where similar issues were addressed, alongside the importance of preserving the independence of the legal profession within the constitutional framework.
These engagements reflect the association’s proactive and constructive role in contributing to the ongoing development and reform of the legal system in Mauritius.
A Renewed Vision for the Future

Doordarshini Roopsoodha Busgeet was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2011 and to the Mauritian Bar in January 2013. She has broad experience across multiple areas of law and previously served at the Financial Crimes Commission as Prosecutor, Senior Officer and Acting Head of the Declaration of Assets Unit. She is currently in private practice and serves as Secretary of the Middle Temple Association (Mauritius).
